Explore Malta by car

Find a car that fits your Malta plans, from an airport arrival to days exploring the coast. Compare your dates, vehicle requirements and the conditions of each available offer. Vrenty Car is an independent affiliate and travel information website. Reservations are handled through Localrent; the selected rental company supplies the vehicle and rental agreement. Pickup locations, payment methods and included protection depend on that offer.

Start with the days you actually need a car

A rental car can make a Malta holiday easier when you want several stops, carry family equipment or stay away from convenient transport connections. It can be less useful during days spent walking around Valletta or staying close to one waterfront base. Before comparing vehicles, divide the holiday into arrival, local days, touring days and departure. This makes the rental period a practical choice rather than an automatic match to the length of your flights.

Write down your accommodation entrance and its parking arrangement. A room described as central might be convenient on foot while leaving you a walk from the nearest suitable car park. Conversely, accommodation with confirmed parking can make an early start straightforward. Ask whether a parking space is reserved, whether entry has height or width limits and whether access changes at night. These details can matter more than choosing a larger vehicle.

Compare the complete offer

Enter realistic collection and return times when looking at Malta car rental options. A low daily figure does not describe the whole booking. Compare the total for the rental period, selected extras, location charges and any charge associated with the proposed hours. Keep the amount payable online separate from the balance due when collecting the vehicle. The deposit is another figure again: it affects available funds even when it is not an eventual rental expense.

Use a short comparison sheet for your shortlisted cars. Include transmission, luggage space, accepted payment method, deposit, excess, mileage and the named collection arrangement. Two offers with similar totals can suit very different travellers. A car with a smaller deposit may still have exclusions you need to understand; a more expensive automatic may be worthwhile for someone adapting to driving on the left. Compare conditions against your own constraints, not an assumed average customer.

Which vehicle fits a Malta itinerary?

Choose the smallest vehicle that comfortably carries everyone and their luggage. Compact dimensions are useful when negotiating narrow streets and parking spaces, but a tiny boot is inconvenient on arrival with several suitcases. Check the actual car details instead of treating a category name as a luggage guarantee. A folded pushchair, mobility aid or bulky sports bag can change what fits even when the passenger count looks comfortable.

Transmission should be a deliberate choice. An automatic removes gear changes from the work of learning an unfamiliar road layout, while a manual can suit drivers already comfortable with both the vehicle and left-hand traffic. A higher driving position is a preference, not proof that an SUV is required for ordinary paved sightseeing routes. Larger bodywork can also make parking and tight entrances more demanding.

Airport collection is an arrangement to confirm

Malta International Airport is the arrival point for many rental plans, but the words airport pickup do not establish where you meet a supplier. An offer might specify an office, an agreed meeting point or a transfer arrangement. Confirm the exact address or map pin, how to identify the representative and whom to call if you cannot find them. Vrenty Car does not operate an airport counter or promise terminal delivery.

Make the collection time reflect the steps after landing: disembarkation, any arrival formalities, baggage and the walk or transfer to the agreed point. Provide the requested flight details and establish the procedure for a delay before travelling. For a late arrival, obtain explicit confirmation that the chosen handover is available at that hour. Our Malta airport collection guide covers the questions to settle before departure and the separate planning needed for the return.

Understand the money held against the rental

A security deposit, an insurance excess and the price of additional protection answer different questions. The deposit concerns money blocked or taken as security. The excess concerns your contribution towards a covered claim under the applicable terms. Optional protection may alter that exposure, reimburse certain costs later or cover specified risks. Its title alone cannot tell you how a claim will work or whether the supplier still requires a deposit.

Read the deposit and insurance comparison guide before choosing on the basis of a small upfront amount. Look for excluded components, reporting duties and the treatment of theft, keys, tyres or glass where these are addressed. Do not assume an external reimbursement policy changes the supplier's agreement. Leave enough funds for the stated security requirement alongside accommodation and normal travel spending, and ask how deposit release is documented.

Cards, documents and eligible drivers

Driver eligibility must be checked for the selected vehicle. Enter the driver's real age and establish any minimum licence-holding period, upper age condition or additional charge before paying. Carry the required original documents and check whether your licence format needs an international driving permit or another supporting document. A booking made successfully online does not by itself prove that every document will be accepted at collection.

Payment for a reservation and security for a vehicle may follow different rules. A card accepted during an online payment might not satisfy the supplier's deposit requirement. If you are relying on a debit card or cash, use our renting without a credit card guide to build a precise question for the supplier. Ask about the card type, cardholder name and physical card, not simply whether cards are accepted.

Drive with room for adjustment

Malta drives on the left. Give yourself an undemanding first journey and take time while parked to locate mirrors, lights, wipers and the parking brake. Set navigation before moving and ask a passenger to manage directions where possible. A missed turn is usually easier to solve by continuing to a safe alternative than by making a sudden manoeuvre. Follow current signs and road markings even when a navigation app suggests otherwise.

The practical challenge often lies at the end of a route: a narrow approach, a one-way street or a parking search. Read our driving and parking guide for preparation. Valletta's controlled access system is a separate consideration from whether a particular parking space is lawful or available. Do not interpret an access charge as permission to use a restricted street or a reserved bay. Plan where to stop before selecting the final navigation destination.

Build touring days around nearby stops

For a day centred on Mdina and Rabat, treat the car as transport to the area and plan the visit largely on foot. Choose legal parking outside restricted streets, take your essential belongings and avoid moving the vehicle simply to shorten a small walk. Our Mdina and Rabat day trip explains how to combine those visits while allowing time for parking, walking and a meal without turning the day into a race.

A separate Blue Grotto and Marsaxlokk drive gives a different use for the car: linking south-coast stops. Keep any boat excursion conditional on the operator's decision and current sea conditions. Road access does not guarantee that a boat is running. Choose one main activity and one flexible secondary stop, then leave room to change the order. An achievable day is more valuable than a long list of destinations reached only briefly.

Add Gozo only after checking the contract

A vehicle ferry connects Cirkewwa on Malta with Mgarr on Gozo, but that does not mean every rental car is authorised to use it. Obtain written permission for the selected vehicle and ask how insurance and breakdown assistance apply on Gozo and during the crossing. A ferry ticket cannot amend a rental restriction. If permission is unavailable, compare travelling as a passenger and arranging onward transport separately.

The Gozo rental car ferry guide separates the vehicle route from passenger-only services and considers whether a day trip or overnight stay fits better. Keep a ferry crossing away from a tightly timed airport return when you can. The total journey involves reaching the harbour, waiting, boarding, crossing and driving onwards. A timetable describes sailings; it does not reserve all the road time and queue space around them.

Collect, use and return the car carefully

At handover, inspect the vehicle with the representative where possible. Compare visible marks with the condition report and record clear photographs of each side, wheels, glass, interior, mileage and fuel indication. Ask for existing damage to be recorded before driving away. Check that agreed extras are present and usable, and learn the supplier's procedure for a warning light or breakdown. Keep the contract and assistance details accessible without leaving personal documents visible in the car.

During the rental, comply with the agreed mileage, road-use and fuel conditions. Tell the supplier about a problem promptly instead of arranging an unauthorised repair. For return, confirm the correct entrance and key handover method beforehand, especially outside staffed hours. Allow for refuelling, inspection and the onward trip to the terminal or hotel. Retain the return record and final payment information until the deposit and any legitimate follow-up charges are resolved.

A car is one option within the holiday

A short rental can work well alongside buses, walking and passenger ferries. Consider using public transport for an urban day and collecting a car for a group of outings that are awkward to connect. The useful comparison is the full journey from your actual accommodation, including walking to stops, transfers and parking. A map showing a short road distance cannot tell you which mode will feel easier with luggage or after an evening activity.

Our car rental or public transport comparison helps you test that choice with your itinerary. Before reserving, complete the sequence below. It keeps the decision focused on a workable arrangement rather than a tempting photograph or headline price.

  • 1. Identify the days, places and passengers that need the vehicle.
  • 2. Confirm accommodation parking and the collection and return locations.
  • 3. Match the selected offer to driver documents, payment and luggage needs.
  • 4. Read the total price, deposit, protection and cancellation conditions.
  • 5. Save the confirmation and resolve essential questions before travelling.

Questions & answers

Can I collect a car at Malta airport?

Check which collection options are offered for your dates and selected vehicle. Airport collection must be confirmed with an exact meeting arrangement and time. A Malta or Luqa location label alone is not evidence of a terminal desk, a free transfer or guaranteed delivery.

Is a small car enough for sightseeing?

A compact car can suit ordinary paved routes when its seats and boot meet your needs. Check luggage, child seats and any mobility equipment together. Choosing a larger vehicle solely because the itinerary includes viewpoints can add parking difficulty without solving a real requirement.

Is no deposit the same as full insurance?

No. Security arrangements and liability are separate parts of the offer. Read any excess, exclusions and reporting requirements even when the deposit is reduced or absent. Ask how the supplier handles a claim and whether optional cover pays directly or reimburses you later.

Should I keep the car for the whole trip?

Base the decision on use, parking and handover logistics. Several touring days may justify a continuous rental, while a walkable city stay may favour a shorter booking. Compare the complete cost of both plans, including transfers needed to collect or return a shorter rental.

Who helps with an existing reservation?

Use the supplier details on your voucher for vehicle, meeting-point and roadside matters. For reservation questions, use Localrent's official support channels. Vrenty Car provides comparison information and guides; it does not dispatch vehicles, change a supplier contract or make decisions on refunds.
